I don’t think I’ve ever purchased something as quickly as I did ABBA Voyage tickets. As someone who has been listening to ABBA Gold on repeat since she was a little girl, the idea of seeing all of my favourite songs in a ‘live’ setting was the only convincing I needed. I can safely say it exceeded all my expectations.
Whether you’re a huge ABBA fan or simply interested in how a show with virtual avatars works, here’s everything worth knowing about the ABBA Voyage experience in London.
Location and Accessibility
Nestled in Pudding Mill, ABBA Voyage promises an accessible and swift journey for those coming from Stratford. The convenience of its location, just a quick 2 minute train ride away, makes it an ideal destination for both locals and tourists seeking a unique musical experience.
First Impressions
Upon arrival, we were immediately greeted with a vibrant and unmistakable ABBA logo, setting the stage for the thematic journey ahead. The attention to branding and detail here is a delightful nod to the iconic group’s legacy. It’s also a great photo opportunity, which I highly recommend utilising, as you’re not allowed to take photos in the actual arena.
Pre-Show Amenities
Due to being a custom-built arena, the organisation of the venue is commendable. A short queue for a ticket and bag check smoothly transitions you into a well-equipped food court. With options ranging from hotdogs (catering to both meat and vegetarian preferences) to cocktails, albeit at London’s typically higher prices, the area offers a chance to relax and dine before the show.
🚨 If visiting in colder months, I’d recommend keeping your coat on you while in the food area, as it isn’t a fully enclosed space. It was also incredibly busy – we had to stand to eat our food. I’d suggest arriving as early as possible if you hope for a seat here.
Ambience & Setting
The arena itself is a spectacle. As you enter a tunnel full of LED lights, you’ll quickly find yourself in the dimly lit arena. The stage pre-show is adorned with a snowy setting, immediately immersing you in a magical atmosphere. The crowd’s energy, building up as the showtime approaches, adds to the anticipation.
The Show Experience
ABBA Voyage transcends a typical concert; it’s a fusion of technology and live performance art. The distinction between reality and holographic illusion blurs as the avatars of ABBA, accompanied by live bands and singers, perform with astounding realism. The avatars, dynamically moving around and interacting with the audience, along with strategic breaks featuring music videos, create a seamless and engaging narrative. I have honestly never experienced anything like it, and judging by the audience reaction, no one else had either.
Setlist & Performance
The 20-song set is a well-curated mix of ABBA’s greatest hits, ensuring that fans of all ages find their favourite tunes. The show’s design, where the virtual and real elements are interwoven, leaves the audience questioning the boundaries of reality, a testament to the show’s innovative approach.
Final Impressions & Future Prospects
Leaving ABBA Voyage, one is likely to feel a mix of awe and an immediate desire to relive the experience. The show, currently running until May 2024, has gained immense popularity. Given its success, it wouldn’t be surprising if the show’s running dates were extended (again!), offering more fans the opportunity to witness this unique blend of music, technology, and nostalgia. If you’re thinking about going, I can’t recommend it enough.
