Why travel eSIMs beat roaming

Three reasons UK travellers switched to eSIMs and never went back.

Avoid the up to £6-a-day roaming trap
UK carriers charge up to £6 every single day you use your phone abroad. A two-week trip is £84 just for a service you already pay for at home. Travel eSIMs can do the same for much less.

What is an eSIM, and do you actually need one?

An eSIM is a digital SIM built into your phone. Instead of a plastic card, you download a carrier profile, a process that takes about two minutes and starts with scanning a QR code. Once installed, the eSIM activates automatically when your phone detects a compatible network abroad.

For UK travellers, the difference is cost and convenience. A local SIM in Japan, Thailand, or the US typically costs between £15 and £20 for a week's worth of data. Roaming on your UK carrier for the same trip can cost five to ten times more. A travel eSIM often costs less than a pint.

Will an eSIM work on my phone?

Most smartphones released since 2019 support eSIM, every iPhone from the XS onwards, Google Pixel 3 and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later. Check Settings → Mobile Data on iOS (look for "Add eSIM"). If you see the option, you're good.

Is a travel eSIM cheaper than roaming?

In almost every case, yes. A 5GB European eSIM costs around £8 on our cheapest providers. The same five days of roaming on a UK carrier can cost £20+ before you've sent a single WhatsApp.

Frequently asked
An eSIM is a digital SIM card built into your phone. Instead of a physical card, you scan a QR code to activate a data plan. Works on most iPhones from XS onwards, and most Android flagships from 2020.
Check Settings → Mobile Data (iOS) or Settings → Connections → SIM Manager (Android). If you see "Add eSIM", your phone is compatible. iPhone XS, Google Pixel 3+, Samsung Galaxy S20+, and most 2021+ Android handsets support eSIM.
No. Your physical SIM stays in. The eSIM runs alongside it. You keep your UK number for calls and SMS — the eSIM just handles your data abroad. No SIM swap, no faff.
Yes. Your physical SIM stays active for calls and SMS. iMessage and WhatsApp work normally because they use data, not your number. Just make sure your UK plan's roaming data is turned off so it doesn't charge you.
After purchasing from a provider, you'll receive a QR code by email. Go to Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM on iPhone, or SIM Manager on Android. Scan the QR code. Install it before you travel — it activates automatically when you land.
We earn a affiliate commission when you buy from any provider. Plans are ranked by price per GB, not by commission rate. We never accept payment to feature or promote specific providers.
Most eSIM issues are down to the plan not being set as your data line in settings. Make sure you've set the eSIM as your data SIM and turned on data roaming for it. Most major providers have 24/7 live chat. Always check the provider's refund policy before buying.
